Matte lips are my everything, especially during the cooler seasons. Yes, the brisk air is out to chap my lips, and I am here to graciously accept it. In that spirit, I decided to pick up the Ulta Matte Lip Creams, while they were on a buy 1, get 2 free sale about a month or two ago. They typically retail for $9, but are currently on a buy 2, get 1 free sale until Dec. 31st!
The lip creams come in a long, glass type tube with an angled doe foot applicator attached for ease of use. I am a huge fan of the applicator and have found it good for both precision and large sweeps of product. There is 0.12 oz of product in each tube. For comparison, the NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams, which run for $5.99 have 0.27 oz of product. The tubes are both the same width, but the Ulta Matte Lip Creams are much longer, which makes me wonder where the rest of that space is going since they have nearly half the amount of product. You are getting more product than in a Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick (0.08 oz) or the Anastasia Beverly Hills line (0.11 oz).
The actual application of these lipsticks is pretty phenomenal for 2 out of the 3 shades. The formula is thinner than a NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream, but thicker than every other actual liquid formula that I’ve tried. Courageous and Passionate both give you excellent and even color payoff in 1 swipe, though I usually do 2 coats to reach peak pigmentation. Tinder tends to be a lot more streaky and patchy, though some of the problems can be resolved by using a lip liner with it and then blending the lip cream in with your finger, rather than with the applicator alone.

In terms of actual wear, they all do a pretty great job. After about 5-8 minuntes they dry down completely matte, but because they are a cream formula, the drying process doesn’t suck the moisture out of your lips. They aren’t transfer proof, but the color won’t really fade as long as nothing touches your mouth. Plus, reapplication with all colors is a breeze and it looks just as smooth as your original coats.
The only beef I have with these lip creams is that they aren’t completely true to color. Courageous is described as a “medium bluish brown” and looks much darker online. In real life, it’s more of a mauvey brown shade. I love the color and it’s my favorite out of my 3 shades, but it definitely did not match my initial expectations.
At the end of the day, I am a huge fan of these lipsticks. I’ve been trying out a bunch of drugstore liquid lipstick formulas and these are the best thus far! They aren’t drying at all, last super long, and have the most seamless reapplication. The only downside is that you aren’t getting a whole lot of product. Fortunately, Ulta’s stream of never-ending sales makes replacing them a cost effective process!
Thanks for reading!
Until next time, have an awesome rest of your day and an amazing rest of your week!
