February Loves

Time is passing way too quickly for me to handle, but I’m going to try to stay positive and reflect on all of the joyous moments – or things, really, in this case! On the topic of great February experiences, this past month’s highlights include: delving into my senior seminar research, taking more naps, clearing up my skin, and finally cooking some chocolate chip banana bread! Now, on to the material objects I’ve been digging!

L’Oreal Lash Paradise Mascara

On the scale of makeup items that I have the most to least passionate feelings about, mascara ranks number three. This one is a gem, but you probably already know that if you’ve been following the blog for a while, because I won’t stop talking about it! I’ve recently been rocking the whole “natural to none at all” eyeshadow look and this mascara paired with that aesthetic gives me a whole “Wow, she could be wearing falsies, but probably not, because there just aren’t enough individual lashes there!” kind of look!

Elf Lip Lacquer in Natural

I’m not really a gloss person, but that might be changing soon! I bought this to use for my Q.U.E.E.N. Transformation and did not actually expect that I would be using it outside of that, especially because it definitely looked like I had the world’s shiniest, ashiest lips upon first application! Then, I calmed it down with some artful layering and I was sold on the look. It isn’t sticky or messy and I love the flat applicator, because it covers so much lip area in one swipe.

ColourPop Lippie Stix in Taurus

I’m never very swayed by YouTube collaboration products, but my obsession with this KathleenLights lippie stix collab with ColourPop has been going on since the beginning of this blog – actually, it’s been going on much longer than that! To be completely honest, I’ve been tempted to buy all of her collaborations with every brand she’s worked, but I think this is the only one I actually own. The formula is creamy and non-drying and the warm brown looks so good against my brown skin!

Taurus + Natural

Do you remember when I said that “some artful layering” turned me onto the lip gloss life? This was the layering that did it: the ColourPop Lippie Stix in Taurus and the Elf Lip Lacquer in Natural. The gloss lightens up Taurus a bit, so that the overall shade becomes a bit more of a natural nude that is much closer to my skin tone. It’s perfect for my lightest makeup days, which I’ve been having a whole lot more of recently!

Wooden Disc & Pearl Earrings

These are the funkiest earrings I own and probably the funkiest earrings I will ever own. They’re big, bold, and blue – and the slightest bit fussy, because the little gold bar in the front sometimes flips behind the wooden disc. Of course, I’m willing to put up with a little bit of fuss, because the earrings look good and were only one dollar.

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie

I wish I was more of a big time book reader, but I’m not. I actually only started reading this one, because I had to for my Race and Ethnicity class and I was shook! It’s a journal style fiction novel from this boy named Junior who is the first person to leave his tribe’s reservation. It’s a humorous, grief-filled, doodle ridden look at adolescence, identity, and the long-lasting effects of racism in communities of color – particularly communities that are often left out of our modern day conversations on marginalization/discrimination, because they’re often placed exclusively in the past. I suggest reading it with an open heart and then listening to this episode of the Code Switch podcast, which is all about blood quantum!

Black Panther

I can’t see into the future, but I am pretty sure this will be my favorite movie in all of 2018. I’m a huge MCU fan, but I don’t actually like every film in the universe. In fact, there are a few movies coming up this year that I don’t think are worth going to the theater to see and may not even watch when they’re available for Amazon rental! I won’t spoil the film for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet (note: Why haven’t you seen it? It’s awesome!!!), but let’s just say it’s a phenomenal film. Action, laughter, brown skin people ruling the world, and a great debate on who is the real villain – it’s too lit!
