Mid-Year Check-In: 2018 To-Do List and Blogging Goals

June is over, friends! That means I’m six months into the most stressful year of my life (which, unfortunately, will not be getting any less stressful any time soon), but also six months into making some serious waves with my 2018 goals! In early January, I published two lists envisioning where I want my life to be and where I want my blog to be and I want to hold myself accountable for making my dreams come true. So, let’s see where we’re at!

Blogging Goals:Blogging Goals:

Gain 500+ Followers

This one happened at the start of June! 500 may not be a lot for some people, but I love that there are 500 of y’all that read occasionally, especially because posting has been very difficult for me this past month. I’ve really been working to include posts that can combine my love for beauty with other things that I’m passionate about, like social justice and Netflix. I haven’t made those changes to the extent that I would like, but I’m glad that people are still here for the blog even as it’s transforming!

Post (at least) Twice a Week

I think I mainly have this down. There was a week when I didn’t post at all, because I had a stats exam and a 10 page paper to write, but other than that, I’ve been pretty good at cranking posts out. I realized that I just need to use the WordPress scheduler for all of my posts, which is actually good, because I’m never at my computer when my posts go up. Instead of having that moment where I’m like, “Oh, no! Are people picking up what I’m putting down?” when I publish a post, I’m usually thinking about breakfast or math when my posts go up. It’s really helped me keep a consistent posting schedule and has eased a lot of my blogging anxiety.

Include More Personal Posts

I think I’ve definitely done a lot more of this, but I’m not at the point where I’d like to be. I do have a few ideas that I want to share though! I went to school and graduated with a degree in Anthropology and Sociology. I’m very interested in the sociology of beauty and did my capstone project/thesis all about black women’s experiences with and participation in the cosmetic industry. I’m not going to share the 40-ish pages that my research turned into, but I do want to write some posts about the ways that black people are economically exploited in the cosmetic industry, makeup as a feminist practice, and the history of makeup!

Test More DIY Products

I have literally done one beauty DIY this year and it was coconut oil and sugar lip scrub. It worked, but it wasn’t particularly post-worthy. I’m not really sure whether or not I’ll get around to dabbling in more DIYs, because it often just seems cheaper to buy premade products instead of some of the very specific products needed for Pinterest style DIYs.

Improve My Instagram Presence

I tried! I really did! And then, once school started, I stopped trying, because I was too busy. This being said, I haven’t completely given up and I have a much better sense of what people respond to on my page: photos of me. The problem is, I don’t have a lot of photos of myself, it’s tedious to take photos of myself, and I don’t really want my Instagram to just be photos of myself. I also have this issue where I know it helps to curate a specific theme for your Instagram, but that’s definitely not conducive to me posting 3-4 times a week like I’d like to. So, I’m very confused, but I’m willing to keep testing things out! We’ll see how it all goes come December!

Personal Goals:

Go to Chicago

This didn’t happen and I really don’t think it’s going to happen! My friends and I were going to go on an Easter break trip to Chicago, but it was a combination of too expensive and too hard to get there. Instead, we went to Nashville, which you can read about here and here and here. It was a great time, so I’m not too bummed about the change of location. I do still want to go to Chicago, but the timing just doesn’t seem right. Like, it’s hard to go places as a broke college student so I think I’m going to wait until I have stable employment and a better savings account! We’ll try again in 2020!

Graduate Magna Cum Laude

This happened and I was so happy! Like, don’t get me wrong: graduation was a nightmare. Nothing about the impending reality of being broke, unemployed, homeless, and leaving most of my friends brought me joy. In fact, my attitude about the whole thing still hasn’t changed. But, I did graduate Magna Cum Laude with a 3.89 GPA, and I have a piece of paper to prove it! Yay?

Start Graduate School

Oh, hi! My name is Liv and I am a suffering grad student! It’s nice, because I achieved my goal, but it’s also not nice, because I’m not having a good time. I feel really bad, because I like the people in my program and I like the work that I’m doing but I kind of hate my life right now. If I had to truly describe it, I’m mainly in a mix of apathy and anxiety. It’s like I’m not living my life; my life is just something that is happening to me. I don’t like feeling like this at all and I really look forward to when I graduate next August and get to close this chapter.

Take Up Russian … Again

Honestly, this post should just be titled “10 Ways Grad School is Ruining My Life!,” because I had to put my Russian studies on hold. I don’t look at Duolingo, I don’t listen to much music, and when I watch YouTube videos, it’s only the ones in English because I don’t feel like extending the brain power to try and guess what is happening. Again, I look forward to when this chapter of my life is over (or, at least to my 2 or 3 week summer break in August) so I can reclaim my time and my hobbies and my interests.

Take More Pictures

I both have and have not made progress on this goal. On the one hand, I definitely have fewer photos of my friends and I than I had anticipated. On the other hand, I do have quite a few photos of my friends and I getting up to stuff that I really like. I’m going to take this as progress though, seeing as I haven’t really been up to much other than working, sleeping, eating, and going to school, so there haven’t been that many great photo opportunities. Hopefully, more will come in the future and maybe I’ll even put together a cool photo album come December.

Did you make any goals for 2018? How are they coming along?

Until next time, have an awesome rest of your day and an amazing rest of your week!

  1. I think you are doing amazingly. Especially with your blogging goals — I don’t even know where I would begin to grow my blog’s readership. I haven’t really tried since “Google Friend Connect” stopped being a thing. You have six-ish more months!
