I don’t know when I got to the point in my life where, “Wow, that reminds me of this episode of this podcast,” became my response to anything that anyone says to me at any time, but here we are. Baby powder? Japan? Student loans? Getting a charlie horse? These all sound like the perfect topics to segue into an amazing podcast recommendation, because I have a podcast problem and I’m not willing to fix it! So buckle up y’all, because we’re taking a trip to Podcast City! Here are three truly amazing podcasts that you should be listening to!
While I don’t really identify as an NPR person, I am super obsessed with this NPR podcast hosted by Shereen Marisol Meraji and Gene Demby. Every week, they and/or other amazing Code Switch reporters or special guests cover an awesome story all about race and identity from around the globe. They’ll do anything from looking at blackface in Colombian television to the creation of “Hispanic” identity in the U.S. to the use of rap lyrics in court, and will always leave you thinking about just how much race and identity are infused in every part of how we live our lives.
I’m really obsessed with true crime stories. As such, it only makes sense that I would be super into Cults. Every episode Greg and Vanessa delve into the story of a different cult and the motivations of its members and leaders. So instead of just getting the “how?” you also get to find out all the “why did this person start their cult and how the heck did they manage to get followers?”. I’ll admit, it’s definitely super spooky and isn’t for everyone, but if you love true crime like I do, then this is a must-listen! I recommend starting with the episodes on Aum Shinrikyo, because they are WILD!
In this podcast, Kevin, Caroline, and a special guest do a deep dive into a different element of Christian pop culture, including TV, movies, and music. Then, they decide whether that cultural artifact deserves a holy toast (where they send it straight up to heaven) or a holy roast (where it goes to burn in hell). Not only is it super funny, but I am very into religion from a sociological perspective, especially in terms of how its used as a tool for cultural framing. All together, this is a hilarious and interesting podcast that you should all listen to! I say start with the episode on one of the worst movies on Netflix starring Adrienne Bailon and Ja Rule, I’m in Love with a Church Girl.
