I love Halloween, but I hate things that are really and truly scary. I can’t handle haunted houses, haunted objects, or – worst of all – horror movies. Despite this, I live for spooky stuff! I went on a ghost tour in New Orleans and loved it and went through a paranormal phase. I now know that I’m a fan of the “semi-spooky.” As such, I’ve crafted this semi-spooky Halloween watchlist for those of y’all who want the vibes of the season, but still want to be able to sleep at night!
American Horror Story: Murder House
Okay, so if you’ve never watched American Horror Story before, you might be thinking, “Liv, you said this was a semi-spooky list! This show literally has the words horror and murder in the name!” I know, but I promise the show isn’t scary in a way that will wreck your life. It’s more of a tale of suspense and the benefits of moving into a new construction home. Plus, it has the world’s wildest plot twist!
Light as a Feather
This show is from Hulu and AwesomenessTV (the latter made me nervous) and is based off a Wattpad fic (enter: more nerves), but I promise you it’s good! It’s about 5 teens who get up to nonsense in a cemetery on Halloween and predict their deaths in a game of light as a feather, stiff as a board. Just girly things, you know? Then, they start to die as predicted in the game! They form a murder mystery squad so they can solve the crimes that the cops can’t, which is my jam! You’ll like this if you enjoy shows like Supernatural and Teen Wolf (Dylan Sprayberry is even in it)!
The Corpse Bride
You’ve heard of The Nightmare Before Christmas. Now get ready for the Tim Burton movie that has less catchy music, but a very special place in my heart! It’s all about this man named Victor who somehow ends up engaged to a dead woman even though he is preparing to marry a living woman. It’s a love triangle like no other! The thematic content and visual tone of the movie is a little spooky, but the plot, music, and characters are as fun as they come!
The Addams Family
Looking for something that is kind of dark, but not dark at all? Watch The Addams Family! If you’ve never actually seen the show before, I’ll catch you up to speed. It’s a classic 60’s sitcom about a wholesome, macabre loving family. It also has one of the catchiest theme songs of all time, which – fun fact – was the song of choice in my childhood Girl Scout troop! Watch it when you just want to relax with a bowl of popcorn, but don’t want to commit to something long or with a multi-episode plot.
If you enjoy creepy stories, history, and/or Buzzfeed Unsolved, then this might be the Halloween watch for you! It’s from the creators of the podcast, Lore, and every episode explores the history of a different spooky story. If you’re a Teen Wolf fan like I obviously am, then I recommend starting on episode 3, because queen of screams Holland Roden is in it!
The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina doesn’t drop on Netflix until October 26th, but you better believe that I won’t be doing anything on that Friday other than watching this show. I mean, I have to go to work, but then it’s Sabrina time! It looks like it’s going to be a darker take on Sabrina than I’ve seen before (especially since I haven’t read the comic), and I am so McFreakin excited! Also, it’s made by the masterminds behind Riverdale and I love Riverdale.
What’s one your Halloween watchlist?
Thanks for reading!
Until next time, have an awesome rest of your day and an amazing rest of your week!
