As anyone who has ever asked me for hair tips may know, I will put almost anything on my hair. I literally walk into the hair aisle, read the labels, and then make my selection based on something unimportant like scent or packaging. That’s why I felt 100% comfortable trying out some shampoo and conditioner from the Dollar Tree. Also, this packaging looked pretty legit and I’m always a sucker for good packaging. Join me on the journey of truth as I review this $1 Daily Defense Moisturizing Shampoo and Frizz Defense Deep Conditioner!
Daily Defense Moisturizing Shampoo
For the low, low price of $1, I got 16 fl oz of this shampoo. It claims to be hydrating, enriched with coconut oil, and sulfate free. It’s also cruelty free, which isn’t a must-have for me, but is definitely a bonus! These things all sound great, but I’m really only looking for two things in my shampoos: cleansing power and good hair feel.
In order to put this shampoo to the test, I used it to tackle a few days of EcoStyler Gel build up. Believe me when I say that my hair was in bad shape. I did about three passes with the shampoo to give it the best shot I could. It did lather a bit, but not a whole lot – again, it’s “low sulfate” – and seemed to get my hair squeaky clean. When I was done with it, my curls were popping, but my hair did feel kind of like soft doll hair. I didn’t hate it, but I’d rather my hair not feel anything like what they put on a toy head.
Daily Defense Frizz Defense Deep Conditioner
For another dollar I picked up 5 fl oz of deep conditioner. It claims to fight frizz, be sulfate free, and also have coconut oil and vitamin E. Sounds good, right? When I’m looking for a conditioner, I’m really looking for creaminess and ultra-moisturization, which I think this hits to some extent. It’s a very thick and creamy conditioner, which I like.
I did use about an eighth of the jar on one wash, but I actually think that’s a good thing. The conditioner was very moisturizing (though not the best I’ve ever used) and treated my curls well. I think because there is less product they had more of an opportunity to focus on turning out a higher quality product – or at least as high quality as you can get for $1. I’m not mad at it at all and I’d definitely recommend it if you’re balling on a budget!
