2019 Goals Recap

Hey, y’all! This post is my late, late New Year’s Gift to myself in which I become the recipient of a little bit of reflection. I went through a whole lot of unexpected life changes last year, that I both was and was not anticipating. I got a masters degree, I moved to a new area, I started a new job, and I tried to open myself up to more new experiences. I also went on a spontaneous trip to a new city, got more comfortable driving, and stopped experiencing stress related pre-mature graying (yay me!). It’s been a wild time, which is why I decided to see if, in all of the things I accomplished last year, I actually accomplished the things that I said that I wanted to do – confusing, right? Here is my 2019 goal recap!

Last year, I made two sets of goal related posts. The first were all goals related to my blog and I can tell you right now, they were definitely a list of flops.

Reach 800+ Followers

As I type, I came in about 12 followers short of my goal and I’m not even mad about it! All of my life changes definitely wrecked my posting consistency, so I was just glad to see that I had any engagement while I was away. At this point, I’m more interested in actual post engagement and seeing what things actually draw people to my blog than how many people hit that follow button (even though it would still be cool if 12 of y’all helped me out)!

Enjoy Getting Social

I do think that I had fun on social media throughout 2019, though I wasn’t exactly consistent. I’m rarely on Twitter, but when I do go on, it’s a hoot. And as always, I’ve been loving Instagram. 2019 really was the year of the Instagram story. Ultimately, I think I did a bad job of tying my social media self and my blogger self together, but – like I said – I had a lot of fun, so I’ll consider this goal semi-met!

Do More Style Content

Oh, this was definitely a flop. During the end of the year, I defiinitely did some more style and fashion related posts, but I don’t know if it was more than usual. A lot of the reason why that happened was because this was my most inconsistent year in general (and I have the bar graphs to prove it). That being said, when I did do style content, it was a fun time, so you win some, you lose some!

Show Off Memphis

Now this was the flop of all flops! I actually did go out more this past year, but I mainly kept the photos either to myself or on my Instagram story. Part of it is because I kind of realized that I wanted to stay in the moment and keep some of these experiences to myself. And the other part, is that it is hard for me to write lovingly and enthusiastically about Memphis because the city has not grown on me. Ouch! I said it! No take-backsies! Like, I have no problem being honest, even if it’s not always positive, but I just feel like the posts would be needlessly mean and nonsensical so they just didn’t happen at all.

Invest in a New Camera

This goal also relates to why I had very few style related posts. Previously, I did not live in a prime location for ever photographing my outfits. My camera needed natural lighting to even take okay pictures, but my neighborhood was not a place that I could safely be outside for extended periods of time. I thought a new camera would fix this, but I never saved up for one, I didn’t research what kind to buy, and then I took an unexpected hiatus so it just didn’t make sense. That being said, I did invest in a new phone that takes pretty decent pictures and that has been my “blogging camera” for the past few months. So again, that is another goal that was semi-completed.

In addition to making blogging related goals, I also made some personal goals, which I was way more successful in accomplishing!

Up My Meal Prep Game

I do think my meal preps got better throughout 2019 and began to include new things like asparagus and brussel sprouts. I really excelled when it came to doing healthy meal preps for lunch – it actually earned me the nickname of “the soup lady” at work! I think I really gained a good sense for which types of foods I like to cook and are good for my body. Chicken and roasted veggies – huge yes! Dairy and black beans – hard pass!

Go on another Friendship Trip

I don’t think I ever posted about this, but it did happen! My friends and I went to St. Louis to go visit another one of our friends! It was a little bit of a spontaneous trip, so there wasn’t a whole lot of exploring the city, but who cares when you get to see your best pals?

Keep a Journal

Okay, so I have a gratitude journal, which I rarely used throughout the year, so this technically was a flop. That being said, I have realized that doing this blog is a little bit like journaling for me. In my post about learning to practice radical self-love, I mentioned that I struggle with vulnerability, which makes journaling hard for me. I always thought that journaling meant writing down long accounts of your day and I don’t want to do that. But, what I can do is write these posts reflecting on my broader life experiences, trends, culture, and society and I think that is still a rewarding experience that I’ve had!

Do Yoga Every Week

Haha! I don’t even remember thinking that this was something that I would do, but apparently I said that I wanted to do this. Well, I can confirm that this never happened. Like, I don’t think I did yoga for even one week, let along every week. What was I thinking?

Practice Kindness

I do think this happened. I had a couple of very humbling experiences in 2019. One of them was becoming a teacher, which requires you to find sources of kindness, empathy, and compassion within yourself that you didn’t even know you had. The second, was going to a fancy medical clinic and being told that I had lymphedema and that it would just continue to get worse. I can’t fully express this in words right now, but I do think that lymphedema has made me a better person. The closest explanation that I have is that it has been an experience of invisibility. It truly is a reminder that you never know what is happening in someone’s life, so you should always approach them with kindness and openness.
